In 2009, I went to the capitol of Washington state (Olympia) to help lobby for improved AIDS prevention legislation. Actually, it was more like an effort to save what funding people living with HIV and AIDS have due to the massive budget crisis. It was an eye-opening experience for me.
I met with legislators (luckily the legislators I met with were all quite supportive), met a range of community members like people who were living on the street with AIDS and are now living healthy, productive lives, and I got to know a side of colleagues and friends that I had never seen before.
I think that this picture sums up the day pretty well, and it’s a powerful testament to the fact that this fight is far from over.
