The Enchanted Circle drive includes Taos and the Rio Grande, but also goes up into the mountains around Taos Ski Valley and Carson National Forest. The family took a drive up there through Angel Fire and Eagle Nest, where we got out to look at Eagle Nest Lake. We stumbled upon a prairie dog there, which reminded me of the prairie dogs we saw in Badlands National Park.
Continuing along, past some epic skies, we wandered around Elizabethtown — well, the ruins of it. It’s a ghost town that today is composed of a couple walls left of the inn and an old automobile overlooking the highway. A descendant of Elizabethtown has kept interest alive, even doing tours.
Finally, we got beers and a mediocre pretzel in Red River. Nice way to finish off the day!
