Fortress on an Island

by hopesfrenzy

We were out of bed before it was dark – and in Helsinki in January, that’s really hard not to do. After landing and getting dinner the night before, we were here on a 24-hour layover. After a warmish Barcelona, it was tough to be back in the cold!

Our destination: Suomenlinna, a fortress island just off the shore from Helsinki. The fortress was built and used by both the Swedish and Russians before it finally fell back into independent Finnish hands.

I ran around the island in the dark and cold and wind like a crazy person while Stéphane followed on the phone – our flight was cancelled!
