In recent years, I have really enjoyed going to art museums and taking photographs of the art in ways that offer unique ways to interpret the pieces… the story, the frame, the texture, a part of a whole.
Kehinde Wiley’s art portrays classical Western paintings with mostly African American subjects from Kehinde’s world. Many subjects were folks from his neighborhood whom he asked them to pick a painting they liked, and then he drew them in that world. I also loved the patterns — the way the subjects are both in front of, surrounded by and behind the background.
His exhibition in Seattle is one of the most stunning I have ever attended…and it made for one pretty great date night.
