The Castle and the River

by hopesfrenzy

Ljubljana is a city marked by green hills, beautiful architecture, and its namesake river Ljubljanica. Each day, we set out from our Airbnb (a converted cigarette factory on the outskirts) and explored each edge of the river and environs. We took a funicular up to the castle, which stands guard over the entire city as the sun was setting. From the top, we could see for miles around. The hills around Ljubljana reminded me a lot of Sarajevo.

The river corridor was marked by red-tiled rooftops and crusted painted facades from another era – not to mention delicious restaurants and posh bars. We stopped at one spot on the river to sample Slovenian wine, which did not disappoint! We also stumbled upon a street fair near the Central Market and joined the young Slovenes dining and drinking in the square, tasting from different booths from some of the restaurants we wanted to try.

On our last evening, Stéphane surprised me with a walk to Park Špica where we spent an hour sitting on the large stone steps, surrounded by a group of muskrats that call Ljubljana home. I had never seen one before! I was shocked to be so close to them. Plus, there was a cat.
