We’ve often heard about Eastern State Penitentiary — I knew it existed, probably from some film or novel I’ve experienced. But I didn’t know it was in Philadelphia, nor did I know it was actually IN Philadelphia. Like right in the middle of the city!
Eastern State Penitentiary (ESP) tells the stories of the men and women who lived there for periods of time – some of whom died there – and the injustices, the racism, the complex problems that prison proposes today.
At times creepy, and others profoundly sad, this is a ruin. One that thankfully has been preserved to show where our prison systems of today have come from, and one from which we can hopefully learn a lesson.
